  • 1 x Microaces R.A.F. SE5a Kit flown by James McCudden
  • 2 x Microaces Detail Pack* (*Optional - select/de-select from dropdown menu)

One of the most famous dogfights of WWI, that epitomizes the desperate, high-stakes nature of late-war aerial combat was the brave, but inevitably fatal last stand of Werner Voss against seven British S.E.5a fighters of the infamous, ace-pilot laden 56 Squadron R.F.C.

23rd September 1917

During the Third Battle of Ypres, German ace Werner Voss engaged in a seminal aerial battle over Belgium. Flying an experimental Fokker F.I triplane, Voss was intercepted by seven S.E.5a fighters of B Flight, No. 56 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, led by Captain James McCudden. Rather than retreating toward German lines, Voss exploited his aircraft’s rapid climb rate and initiated a direct head-on attack against the superior British force.

Youtube Channel 'Air War Chronicles' produced a superb 13 minute, fully animated video of the ensuing battle. It's definately worth a watch if you have the time.

James McCudden was so moved by Voss's skill during the battle, that he wrote a fitting tribute to the man in his memoir 'Flying Fury':

'As long as I live I shall never forget my admiration for that German pilot, who single-handed fought seven of us for ten minutes and also put some bullets through all our machines. His flying was wonderful, his courage magnificent, and in my opinion he was the bravest German airman whom it has been my privilege to see fight'.
